How to Elope in Melbourne (Without It Feeling Cheap or Lazy)
Let’s be honest for a second. The word "elopement" used to conjure up images of running off to Las Vegas on a whim.
Or, closer to home, a quick, sterile registry office job where you feel like you're renewing your driver's licence rather than promising your forever to your favourite person.
Thankfully, times have changed.
As a Melbourne elopement celebrant who has stood alongside more than 700 couples as they said "yeh nah" to the traditional wedding circus, I am here to tell you that eloping in Melbourne is one of the coolest, most intentional ways to get hitched.
It is absolutely not the "cheap or lazy" option. It is the option for couples who want all of the romance, warmth and intimacy, and exactly zero of the family drama or performance anxiety.
Here is how to pull off an epic Melbourne elopement that still feels incredibly special, deeply personalised, and 100% you.
Step 1: Ditch the "All or Nothing" Mindset
An elopement doesn’t mean it has to just be the two of you and a couple of random witnesses pulled off the street (though if that’s your vibe, I am all in).
Think of it as a micro-wedding’s cooler, more relaxed sibling. You can absolutely bring your parents, your siblings, or your four best mates. My rule of thumb? If you wouldn’t pay for their dinner on a normal Tuesday night, they probably shouldn’t be at your elopement. Keep the guest count under 10 to 15 people, and suddenly the pressure just evaporates.
Step 2: Choose a Location That Actually Means Something
When you aren’t trying to feed and water 120 people, the entire map of Victoria opens up to you. You aren't locked into traditional, expensive reception venues.
Want to say your vows in a moody, graffiti-filled alleyway in Fitzroy or Brunswick before hitting up your favourite wine bar? Done.
Want to head up to the Macedon Ranges or the Yarra Valley, rent a stunning Airbnb, and get married on the deck overlooking the hills? Incredible.
I’ve been marrying all over Victoria for a decade so I’ve got a massive shortlist of secret spots across Melbourne metro and regional Victoria that look spectacular in photos and don't require a permit the size of a house deposit.
Step 3: Don't Skimp on the Legends (Your Vendors)
Here is the biggest mistake couples make when downsizing their wedding plans: they assume an elopement means you don't need a professional team.
If anything, your choice of vendors matters more when the group is small. You need people who bring the right energy.
The Photographer: You still want incredible photos to show the people who weren't there. Pick a photographer who is relaxed, fun, and acts more like a mate holding a camera.
The Celebrant (Oh heyyy): Just because a ceremony is short doesn't mean it should be a generic, legal checklist. You still deserve a story-led, funny, warm ceremony that makes you laugh and cry. It is actually more important to have a celebrant you feel comfortable with with elopements and micros- so there’s no awkward vibes.
Music: An acoustic musician or duo sets a beautiful tone, adding to the ambience of the day.
Why Choose a Premium Elopement Experience?
Look, you can go down to the registry office for a few hundred bucks. But if you want a day that actually feels like a wedding - where your love story is front and centre, drink premium champagne in a place you love, and where the vibes are immaculate - investing in a premium experience is worth every cent.
With 350+ five-star Google reviews from couples who wanted to do things differently, I specialise in crafting non-traditional, completely custom elopements for legends who want to skip the stress and get straight to the good stuff.
